Cider Mill Inn Cranberry Sauce

The Cider Mill Inn sits on the corner of Market Street and Smiths’ Alley in NorthRidge.  The tavern is owned and operated by the same family that owns the largest orchard near NorthRidge.  The tavern was started when the family got too big and one of the brothers fell in love with cooking.  He bought a small tavern that was on the edge of north ridge and changed the name and started to cook there. The tavern flourished partly because he got his fruits and cider from his family but also because he was an amazing cook.

That was many years ago and NorthRidge grew around the tavern. The tavern also grew to include some nice rooms for travelers and the menu expanded with each generation.  One of the most remarkable things they serve is not actually on the menu, but comes with many of the meat dishes. It is a cranberry sauce to be eaten in small quantities with the meats.  Many people in NorthRidge thought cranberries were poisonous before they started serving them. One of the waitresses once told me how their family had learned that cranberries although very sour are not poisonous.

One of the young girls of the family who owned the tavern was dared by to all of her brothers to eat some of those funny red berries that grow near the creek in the Orchard.  The girl remembered the warnings of her mother that those berries were poisonous but she was mad at her brothers and thought to herself, ‘well one berry should only make me sick and get them and lots of trouble’.  The berry was very sour but it did not make her sick even though she waited for two hours.  This only made her madder and she told her mom that those cranberries down by the creek are not poisonous just very sour.  The mother tried some and did not get sick either and the very next day made the sauce that has graced the tables of the Cider Mill Inn to this day.
