Squirrelin Scones
In the Forest of Mists, just south of the port town of Rantor, live the
few remaining tribes of the Squirrelins. They have a very human looking
body, (provided that the human is two feet tall and covered with grey
fur). The only parts of them that do not look truly human are their large
bushy tails and pointed ears. Squirrelin sightings are the main source
of rumors that the Forest of Mists is haunted. They move very quickly
and their grey fur is an excellent camouflage, so the few people who actually
catch a glimpse of their small, fast moving gray forms conclude that they’re
ghosts. Their language, a cross between a normal speech and animal noises,
is very disquieting when heard at night in the forest.
They are at least as intelligent as the average human, and have a much
longer life span due to their origins. They are just one of the many cross-races
that were spawned after The First War. Many of the survivors of the Race
of Light and the Race of Dark transformed themselves into animals in order
to escape from the war’s aftermath. The longer they stayed in an
animal shape the more like that animal they became. After several years
many of the refuges entirely forgot that they were not animals, and cross-bred
with the natural animals.
The Squirrelins are farmers and due to their metabolism and predominately
vegetarian origins they never progressed much beyond basic tribal communities.
A peaceful race, they prefer a type of ceremonial combat in lieu of inter
tribal wars. They reside in permanent villages where they tend groves
of nut trees and plant sugar cane, grains and berries in the small clearings
of the forest. With regards to their cooking, it tends to resemble what
most people would consider desserts, but they eat them as meals. One of
their favorites is similar to a scone. Its content varies depending upon
what nuts and berries are available at the time, but this is the basic
recipe.
